How to enable subsection numbering in documentclass "memoir"

I tried \setcounter{secnumdepth}{3} and \setcounter{secnumdepth}{2} to enable subsection numbering for documentclass "memoir", but it did not work. The subsection is still displayed without numbers (e.g. 1.1.1).

How can I turn on subsection numbering?
